Oh, I've been loving you, nigh on a year. That's how long it takes me, to get my head clear. Oh, I remember when, you were on my side. Then I think about the day, I heard that you'd lied. Oh, I've been loving you, so very long. 365 days, 365 ways you've done me wrong.

about

Oliver Compton & the Comptones used to host a great blues jam on Sundays at the Crazy Horse in Nevada City (RIP Crazy Horse.) That's where I met the fantastic harp player and singer, Lary Dumas. We ended up on stage together a few times and liked the vibe. We talked about Freddie King other cool guys, and I think we both left that evening imagining tunes to do together at the next week's jam. The first songs we came up with were the "Boogie Man" and "Goin' Down."

Soon, Lary and I had talked each other into organizing something. He called some of his old buddies from previous bands and before I knew it, we had "Nine Tenths." The name was a sort of complex reference to gas prices that I'll admit I didn't really get. But who cared, these guys could play!

They had been an established band before, so it became a bit of a "sit-in and jam" session for me. We added a few of my numbers to fill out a three set show (or four short sets with three breaks) and ended up gigging at bars and outdoor events throughout the summer.

I made these recordings at several of those shows and a few jams out at Lee's barn in Marysville.

I've organized it like we would have for a bar show with two sets, with "Aint No Sunshine..." closing the first set. There are a few originals that the guys had already, including "Red Moon" and "Voodoo Queen," both of which I dig very much. "Girl in Blue" and "I Remember When" are my songs from an old record. "Big Legged Woman" and "Five Long Years" are both tunes that I had performed at the Crazy Horse jam.

I put the "Barn Jams" at the end, starting with "On the Road Again."

The Nine Tenths band has split back into a few pretty cool groups including Red Moon:

Thanks so much to Larry, Lee, Tony, and Clark for having me sit in with them for a great summer! I learned a lot from you guys.
